Chitwan National Park
Understanding the different zones of Chitwan National Park helps you plan your activities and know what to expect in each area.
The protected heart of the park. No permanent settlements, strictly limited visitor access. All safaris require official permits and must be guided. This is where the highest wildlife densities are found.
A 750 km² zone surrounding the core park. Buffer zones allow for limited community activities and provide wildlife corridors between the core area and surrounding landscape. Many walking safaris take place here.
The northern sector of Chitwan, bordered by the Rapti River. Meghauli is where Chitwan Bamboo Lodge is located — directly on the river boundary. This sector has one of the highest rhino and bird densities in the park.
The central eastern zone containing the park headquarters at Kasara. The elephant breeding centre and gharial conservation project are located in this sector. Reached on our 4-day tour.
Chitwan Bamboo Lodge is located in Meghauli village, directly on the northern bank of the Rapti River — one of the best positions in the entire park for wildlife viewing.
